1920s
In the 1920s, 5th Ave. was the most influential outlet and supply center for the agricultural community in Eugene.
The original building on the corner of 5th and High St. was built in 1929. It housed a poultry business that served Lane County residents from delivery docks facing 5th Ave. In 1946, a 5-story concrete mill was built next door.
Humble Beginnings
1976
By the 1970s many buildings around 5th Ave. were vacant, and visionary Norm Fogelstrom dreamed of and spearheaded a renovation.
In March of 1976 the Market was born, and quickly became a lively attraction that drew both locals and tourists to shop and dine downtown
5th Street Public Market is Born
The Original 5th Street Public Market
What began as a large communal space where vendors could rent a table for $2 a day quickly became a vibrant marketplace, home to a combined 85 merchants selling everything from jewelry and clothing to original artwork and handmade creations.
The Market and it’s indoor/outdoor design was revolutionary at the time, and attracted endless visitors who enjoyed the local shopping and unique features. Spaces like the bustling courtyards and serene fountain that are central to the Market to this day.

He built a cabin in 1849 on a hill overlooking the river near what is now Skinner Butte Park.

It operated for 24 years, producing feed for all kinds of animals including fish, mink and dogs.

It’s first store opening in 1988, a heritage store years later where the Inn at the 5th is now, and it’s current store that opened in 2020 in the Alley.

The Market Today
Today—still reflecting the Market’s original design—local craftsman of food, products, and services lease spaces around the Market, providing a wide variety of experiences and shopping opportunities for almost 2 million locals and tourists who pass through the market each year to enjoy.
5th Street Public Market expanded into the hospitality industry when it opened the Inn at the 5th, a boutique hotel in 2012, which has attracted many tourists to Eugene, Oregon and the Market.
The 5th Street Public Market Alley along with the art-centric Gordon Hotel and Gordon Lofts apartments followed in 2021, significantly expanding the Market and providing additional elements of charm, life, and local flare that draw people in to stay, work, live, and play.
The Market continues to evolve while staying rooted in the unique spirit of Eugene, Oregon. By celebrating local culture, supporting small businesses and creating memorable experiences, it welcomes visitors and residents alike to discover all the city has to offer while fostering meaningful connections throughout the community and beyond
