Wine & Cheese Class: Pays Basque

Wine & Cheese Class: Pays Basque

The Pays Basque area of France has the distinction of producing very well known products, but remaining fairly obscure as a region. The odds are good that one of their hard-to-pronounce wines (often quite reasonably priced) or rich sheep's milk cheeses have passed your lips, but you may not have known it was Basque! The region is matched in size only by the Loire Valley, stretching 360 miles of land like a patchwork quilt, gold with wheat and corn, green with vines, lined with cows and sheep and mountains, with a climate influenced by both the Mediterranean and Atlantic - it is a place of beauty, distinction, and rich flavors. If you're ready to try powerful Madiran, regal Jurancon, earthy Ossau-Iraty or Gabietou - join us!

We’ll talk about the history, artfulness, and (dare we say) joyfulness that goes into each cheese’s production, and we’ll touch on (and, of course, try) some classic summertime wine and food pairings.

Rhone Valley Wine & Cheese Class

The Rhône River is dotted with vineyards from its headwaters in Switzerland to its mouth on the French Mediterranean coast. Most can say they’ve had and loved a Rhône wine; from rich, meaty syrah to earthy, chewy grenache. The valley itself is considered collectively, but the Northern and Southern halves are climatically and viticulturally distinct. With this class will explore and explain the Southern portion - home of appellations like Côtes-du-Rhône, Luberon, Ventoux, and the venerable Chateâuneuf-du-Pape. To accompany these wines we will offer a selection of classic French cheeses and discuss pairing techniques and how to seek out wine and cheese partnerships on your next shopping trip. Join us!

Call 541-600-8972 for reservations.

About The Promise:

The Promise is a one-hour documentary about the premium wine growing region of Rogljevo, Serbia. Cyrille and Estelle Bongiraud, a prominent French winemaking family, have made an impassioned commitment to restoring the Rogljevo region to its glory of past centuries. Cyrille is a vineyard site specialist and has also studied the soils for some of Oregon’s top wine grape growers. So important was wine from some 300 cellars in Rogljevo to French wine connoisseurs, that a railroad was constructed between that village and Bordeaux during the reign of Napoleon III. Today, Cyrille Bongiraud has led his effort with Obecanje, a wine from the Gamay petits grains grape. Its name means “The Promise” in Serbian. Obecanje has been placed in a few top restaurants in Paris and
Tokyo, but most wine drinkers have not yet accepted the fact that premium wine can come from Serbia. Rogljevo is nearly deserted as a result of past communist economics, inhabited today by aging grape growers. This is a wonderful film about culture, community and a family’s love for making premium wine.
A film by Serbian Producer, Director Zeljko Mirkovic. He is presently an
instructor at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA.
