The Pays Basque area of France has the distinction of producing very well known products, but remaining fairly obscure as a region. The odds are good that one of their hard-to-pronounce wines (often quite reasonably priced) or rich sheep's milk cheeses have passed your lips, but you may not have known it was Basque! The region is matched in size only by the Loire Valley, stretching 360 miles of land like a patchwork quilt, gold with wheat and corn, green with vines, lined with cows and sheep and mountains, with a climate influenced by both the Mediterranean and Atlantic - it is a place of beauty, distinction, and rich flavors.
